Make Responsible Alcohol Service a Resolution in 2011
The New Year is a time to reflect on the changes we want or need to make. A resolution that should be on
the top of every operator’s list is responsible alcohol service. What can you do to protect your license and
ensure the safety and well being of your customers in 2011? Here are a few resolutions you may want to
make:
1. Create and maintain an alcohol service policy that every employee should follow. If you already
have a written policy, review it and make appropriate changes to address any issues you may have
had in 2010. If you do not have a written policy, now is the time to create and implement one.
2. Train and re-train staff and management. All staff should be certified in a reputable alcohol
server-training program. The advantages of certifying your staff include liability insurance discounts;
protection through a reasonable efforts defense in the event of an alcohol-related incident in your
establishment; and the benefits including community goodwill that come to your establishment from
the knowledge that you are preventing intoxication, drunk driving, and underage consumption. Make
sure that the program takes a positive approach to the sale of alcohol and includes skills training in
intervention techniques, and that you re-train employees as necessary.
3. Documentation – Keep good records. One of the best defenses against liquor liability lawsuits
is good documentation. In addition, consistent and thorough documentation is an essential part of
demonstrating a commitment to responsible alcohol service. Whether it is training certification records
or an incident report logbook, operators should make a habit of keeping a daily log of the happenings
at their establishment. TIPS offers a bound Incident Report Log Book for $30.00 plus tax and
shipping.
4. Communicate with the public. Let community members know that you are part of the solution.
Demonstrate your commitment to responsible service by working with community coalitions, law
enforcement, local associations, and/or college campuses. Post signage in your establishment to
share your ID-checking and alcohol service policies and to show that your staff has been certified in a
reputable alcohol server training program.
